Transport Azumah begins service to unconventional city pairs

Today was the first day for Transport Azumah's new service between New Haven and Boston. Next week, Azumah will begin running buses on several underserved routes between cities in the Northeast: New York and Cambridge, and New Haven and Philadelphia/Wilmington/Baltimore/DC.

The Harvard Crimson quotes Joel Azumah as saying that there will not be wifi or power outlets until the spring, but we've got it straight from the horse's mouth that unboxed bikes will be allowed "as long as they are tagged with the owner's name and contact phone."

Azumah didn't take me up on my suggestion to stop in White Plains and connect with trains to Manhattan and the Trailways and Shortline buses to Long Island and the Hudson Valley, but hey, he's the one with the hands-on experience, and it's his money on the line. Let's all wish him success in adding to the travel options in the Northeast - especially for cyclists!

  1. What possible reason is there to stop in White Plains rather than New York?

  2. Easier to get on and off the highway.

  3. Why not a terminus at Fordham Rd, near the MNR railroad and D subway? It would be more convenient than 34th St for anyone living uptown or in the Bronx

  4. Sure, but if you're going to do that, Tremont Avenue would be closer to the highway.

  5. By stopping in New Haven, Azumah provides the opportunity to ride Metro-North out of NYC and beat all the traffic. I think this is a great connection! Travelers from Westchester and the Bronx can connect at Harlem 125th to the New Haven Line.

  6. Captain, that would work too; I thought more trains stopped at Fordham, however.

David: Great idea! One thing; it costs $28 round-trip off-peak to take Metro-North from Grand Central to New Haven. The round-trip bus is only $40. The advantage of a Bronx terminus is that you can use your current MetroCard to get there, or if you're visiting NY, you can buy an unlimited-ride card on arrival.

  7. A friend heard today that her trip for next Wednesday was cancelled. Not an auspicious start. Can you follow up about whether they're able to maintain anywhere near their promised level of operations?

So that you can get from New Haven to Albany without going into Manhattan? Or Oneonta? Or Massepequa? or New Paltz or Utica or Queens Village or ....

  9. If you want to get to Albany, then stop at Croton-Harmon, not White Plains.

  10. Not quite.

A certain large bus ticketing company decided to play games with our pre-purchased tickets. It is bad business to sell someone's tickets and not remit the funds in a timely fashion. When we contacted our factoring company, they advised us not to extend credit to this company.

It is not fun to lose the biggest travel period of the year to stupidity (an understatement), but we will get this situation fixed as soon as things calm down.
